It's Not My Fault

I'm so mad! I have been slacking off on blogging lately but it's not my fault. I'm not going to take the blame for this slackiness. Nope. I'm putting all the blame on Mom and the Olympics.

Flash back to 1980. For some of you, you can't flash back that far because you weren't born. I wasn't born yet either but I Mom tells me it feels like 1980 was just yesterday. Um, okay. Whatever you say Mom. Why are we flashing back to 1980? Because the Winter Olympics that year were pure magic and Mom was glued to the tube back then like she is today.

Everyone has heard about the Miracle on Ice from the 1980 Winter Olympics. Hearing Al Michaels scream "Do you believe in miracles?" still brings goosebumps to Mom's rms. The cheers in Lake Placid when the US beat the Soviets could be heard around the world. Even though it was just the semifinals, the victory was just what the US needed to believe in themselves, as a team and as a country.

Another story of the Olympics were America's sweethearts Tai Babilonia & Randy Gardner. They were poised to bring the crowds to their feet and win the hearts of those who didn't even like figure skating, but it was not to be. They had to withdraw prior to the competition because Randy was injured. Mom was devastated. Crushed. Despondent. And that was on top of the fact that Mom had pulled a muscle in her neck right before the start of the games and had to watch a week of the Olympics with her cheek on her shoulder. Figure skating takes on a whole different level when viewed sideways.

But what does all that have to do with today? Good question. Mom had not planned on watching the Olypmics this winter because she just wasn't interested. Her interest in figure skating has waned over the years and she's not a big fan of the other sports. Then the games started and she just can't get enough of them, but this time it's not figure skating she's obsessed with it's curling.

Dad thinks that Mom must be part Canadian. I doubt it because her peeps are either Native American or from the old country. Mom does have a French sounding name but she's not French at all. She had never even watched a curling match until earlier this week and now she won't even leave the house because curling is on tv all the time. Back in the old days the Olympics were on one tv channel, ABC, but in 2010 they are on everywhere. All day and all night long.

What is it about curling that Mom is drawn to? I wish I could explain it but I can't. There's not much action, the matches are kind of slow, and all the American athletes say 'aye' all the time. What gives? I don't really know but my only guess is that old people curl and since Mom is old maybe she thinks she can curl. How dumb is that?

I'm getting a little concerned about Mom because all of her attention is on curling and not on me. She claims that I'm just as obsessed with curling as she is but that's just Mom trying to divert the madness off herself. I like curling, I really do. I like the strategy involved and the outfits. But I have a blog to update, blogs to visit, and a belly that needs to be rubbed.

I'm trying to think of a way to get Mom out of her curling obsession. Should I have her hypnotized? It works for smokers so maybe it will work for a wannabe curler. Should I break all the tvs? Probably not a good idea. With no tvs there wouldn't be any curling to watch but Dad would die without the tv so he would probably kill me. Break the cable boxes? Cut the electricity to the house? There doesn't seem to be a good solution for Mom's addiction.

My one saving grace is that the Olympics will be over in a week and then Mom will be back to normal. Well, as normal as she can be which isn't very normal. Mom watches most of the matches in the family room where my Valentine's Day cards are so I get to look at them all the time. Thank goodness for that! I refuse to take them down until the madness ends. And if it doesn't end, we will just have to find another place to put the Christmas cards.

Stubby,

You're kidding us, right? Curling? Is it because it's better for the environment or something? Oy. We thinks your parent needs an intervention.

Pee S: word verification "catump". Whut the hail is that?! Cat sex??

Hi Stella, Gunther & Betty! Mom totally needs an intervention. Do you guys have experience with that sort of thing? Surely you must be able to help her.

It's funny you ask about the environmental impact of curling because I left that part out of my post. I may post about it tomorrow but after looking at the curling schedule, I don't think the computer will back on until Monday.

Hey Hank! I am pretty honked off. I just can't believe how Mom has gotten sucked into this curling mess.

I told her what you said about Nascar and she said it's just not for her. Huh? At least she knows how to drive a car so watching Nascar should be more familiar to her.

Pee-s: The word verifications never cease to amaze me. Who comes up with that stuff?

Ditto on Stella, Gunther and Betty's comment.

I mean, curling? The game where people sweep up after a rock? Can't your mom skip the Olympics and just grab a broom and sweep the floor in your house?

I asked Google to explain your mom's curling fever and found this explanation >>

Why watch curling? Ask a Canadian:

PS> your 1980 flashback gave my human her own flashback: 1976, Dorothy Hamill haircut!!

Hi Stubby
What's a pug to do?
ol I have the directory open to find a hypnosis for your mom to deal with that curling addiction.
Geeze, I don't get that curling stuff. If I walked out on that ice- all the ice would melt and curling would be history.
I will let you know when there is an available appt for the hypnotec to see your mom.
Mom said she was certainly around in those 8o olympics- but she said she was in"another world" if you know what that means. I don't.

Stubby, your mom needs the "all curling, all the time" network! Me, I like the hockey -- the Blackhawks have players on six players on three different Olympic teams (3 on Canada, 1 on USA, and 2 on Slovenia). I think you'll just have to put up with your mom for a little while yet.

Oh, I so do remember that event in 1980. Our family was glued to the t.v. also! Wasn't it great?

Oh, hi Stubby, sorry! Here, come a little closer sweetie, we'll rub your belly!

Maybe you can hide the remote controls?
Just a thought.....

If Mom keeps ignoring you, you can pull her credit card out of her wallet, call a car service and come over here. She probably won't notice since she'll be watching the curling.

Hi Puglet! Yep, sweeping rocks on ice is what Mom is hooked on. I told her what you said about sweeping the floor and she handed me the Dyson.

Mom and I watched the YouTube video and learned a few things from it. Mom has been asking your friend Google things about curling all week long.

Pee-s: Mom loved the Dorothy Hamill reference. She said those haircuts were all the rage back them. Mom had several school friends with that haircut.

Hi Tweedles! Thanks for helping our with Mom's problem. I hope you get an appointment for Mom soon before it's too late.

I hate walking on the ice and avoid it at all cost. I just don't get it.

I didn't know what your mom meant about being in "another world" so I asked my mom and she just smiled. I think she was in "another world" for most of the 80's too.

Hi dw! It feels like we have already have the curling network! I'll hang in there but I'm going to do a lot of pouting.

Dad and I are so excited about the hockey game tonight. Thankfully, the curling matches are both before and after the game.

Hi Riley & Star! Mom talks about those Olympics everytime the Winter Olympics are on. She says everyone in the US was glued to their tvs but that back then most people didn't have a tv in every room.

I think I might have to steal Mom's car and drive down to Texas. I would love to hang out with you guys and get some belly rubs.

Hi Gen & the Foo! I tried hiding the remotes but Mom found them. I even took the batteries out but she found those too. I guess I could never be a spy or secret agent?

I like the idea of using her credit card to call a car service. You are so right that she would never notice. I could probably just steal her car and drive to Popeyes too.

Hi Sequoia & Tuni! Mom watched that skiing and shooting stuff too. She really liked it but she doesn't know how to ski or shoot either. Maybe we can send our moms away to a skiing and shooting school so we can hang out with our dads.

I'll let you know what I decide to do. If I don't come up with a plan soon I may just run away.

Hi Melissa & Emmitt! Mom says that curling is totally interesting and relaxing but I just don't get it. Mom yells and claps throughout the matches. She even does her 'nervous eating' which is usually reserved for watching her Cowboys.

Oh Stubby, I knows how you feels! Mum wasn't into watching the olympics either then all of a sudden! Holy smokes she can't get enoughs! I am tired of us lounging on the couch watching the olympics. When I want to play stuffy toy she tells me laters! "laters" when Mum!!!!

Hey and I am Canadian and I don't get this curling thingy at all. We talked about it at Dickens birthday party yesterday. Whatever is what I say. Apparently in the Canadian Prairie Provinces at high school it is part of the PE curriculum to do curling! PFT I would rather do fetching, myself!

Here is a jokes I heard Mum tell Dickens..... Why do Canadians say Eh?.... you would too if your country was spelled C A(eh) N A(eh) D A(eh)! Get it! BOL.

For the record Mum says eh a lots!
Oh I luvs your Valentine display very lovely and much better to look ats then ice and brooms! BOL.

Hi buddy!
I don't know much about sports but I do know that my own mother has been neglecting me and my blog for too long, so I feel your pain. She asked me to post about the valentine's day cards but I told her that we should wait until we receive all of our cards, because those from Canada took much longer to get here! I will take pics and post about them, thank you so much again for organizing, it was so much fun!

I think we all get a little drawn in, no worries. But please tell your humans NOT to look at the curling pic I just posted or they'll hate me. :)

hahaha poor Stubby! I know what you mean.. I have been glued to the tv too. Although I will say the NBC announcers have to be some of the lamest ones I have heard so far, they just don't get excited, do they? lol

I have been watching alot of curling this year as well and I don't know why, never played it and I have never been in to it either.

:)Don't worry.. the olympics end at the end of the week.... lol

Hi Coco! What is wrong with our moms? We hate to be ignored and they know it. My bloggy is very important to me but Mom always tells me she has other things to do. Whatever!

I'm so glad you participated in the Valentine's Day card exchange. I love looking at all the cards and thinking about all my friends.

Hi Life with Dogs! Thanks for stopping by. It's good to hear from you.

I guess everyone gets sucked into the Olympics and that's okay since it's not a yearly event. Mom visited your blog and cracked up at the curling picture. I'm sure lots of people would like to use cats as curling stones!

Hi Lex! I guess the NBC announces are kind of lame. It seems like Mom always hits the mute button when we watch the Olympics.

I'm so glad the madness will soon be over. I think I deserve some big time treats for the curling abuse I've been put through.

Hi Dana & Penny! Thanks for saying I look sexy. I think I'm doing good for an old guy.

Do worry if you've never heard of curling because I doubt most people in Las Vegas have. You're not missing out because it's kind of dumb, but don't tell Mom I think so.
